Praying for displaced people

The Methodist Church in Britain and All We Can recently launched an appeal for people displaced as a result of the escalation of violence in Myanmar. Since violence flared up in Myanmar in late August 2017, an estimated 519,000 Rohingya have sought shelter and safety in Bangladesh. Many are currently living in temporary unsanitary structures constructed out of plastic sheeting and bamboo in informal camps and settlements. All We Can also continues its work with people seeking sanctuary in Jordan because of conflict in Syria and its response to the food crisis that has displaced thousands across East Africa.

This November we consider the issues affecting displaced people we are working with and we pray for them and those involved in offering them hospitality, sanctuary, shelter and support.

Rohingya refugee crisis

Over the past few weeks, more than half a million people have fled violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The majority of those fleeing are Rohingya women and children. Refugees are arriving in Bangladesh exhausted and traumatised and camps and local host communities are struggling to respond to the scale of this disaster.

  • We pray for safety and sanctuary for Rohingya refugees.
  • We pray for the staff of All We Can’s humanitarian aid partner agency working in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, give them wisdom and resourcefulness to compassionately meet the needs of the hungry, scared and sick fleeing Myanmar.
  • We pray for an end to the unrest in Myanmar.

Rohingya Refugee Crisis Appeal prayer

God of our world,
we ask you for your protection over the Rohingya people fleeing persecution and violence.
We ask that you might stretch out your mighty arm
and bring peace where there is conflict
and justice where hatred has a hold.

God of our world,
live in us so that we might hunger for your love
and see the people of this world as our neighbours.
We ask that you will stir in us compassion and a thirst for change for all people facing danger and persecution
for a world in need of the hope you can bring.

God of our world,
rest your hand of comfort over the Rohingya people
be with the people who seek shelter, food and warmth.
Enable those who work for their safety to reach those in most desperate need and continue to challenge us
to pursue a life of justice and of peace.

A prayer for refugees

creator of all,
For people who are displaced;
may they find a safe refuge.
For people who have lost control of their lives;
may they know a sure foundation.
For people who live in fear;
may they be given a strong fortress.
For people who are disillusioned;
may they have hope in a future.
Loving Father,
in times of crisis,
sorrow and uncertainty;
we ask that you draw near.
